A Leisurely Stroll Through The Cemetery (Part 1)

Happy FunDay!

Ghostly Encounters

I love a pleasant stroll through any old cemetery; the further back in time the headstones go, the better.  The artwork is beautiful, and I find some of the messages inscribed very interesting.  Whenever I go out of town, I try to find a day-time historical tour of that city’s most haunted cemetery and then after the sun goes down, out for a good old fashioned ghost hunt.

Below are some of my favorite cities’ cemeteries, with pictures I have taken, history of the site and paranormal phenomena from the local ghost tour company.  If you love this type of thing, visit the website for each of the tour companies to read more of the ghostly happenings.

Next week, I will be taking you on a tour of my two favorite cemeteries in the United States.

The Huguenot Cemetery in St. Augustine, FL

Established in 1821, this ancient St. Augustine Cemetery is located just across from the City Gates. It was opened to serve as the final resting place of those in the city who were not Catholic.  At the time, the only other cemetery in the city was the Tolomato, which was reserved for Catholics only. Just after this burial ground opened, an epidemic of yellow fever broke out, claiming the lives of many St. Augustine residents.  Home to approximately 436 of the city’s deceased, Huguenot was the first public cemetery.

Believed to be the most haunted cemetery in the Ancient City, Huguenot has been called “Spirit Central” because of the many inexplicable events, sightings and recorded paranormal activity over the years.

Visitors to the Huguenot Cemetery can expect to see more than gravestones that date back nearly two centuries. They can also expect to see things they may not understand, feel things that they cannot explain and experience a true sense of something supernatural going on around them.

If you’re planning on visiting St. Augustine to enjoy paranormal pursuits, grab a seat on the Ghosts & Gravestones Tour to discover the truth about haunted Huguenot. Bring your camera, your sense of adventure and stay calm – the ghosts can always tell when you’re scared.

Colonial Cemetery in Savannah, GA

FunDay_Ghosts_101522_3

Colonial Park Cemetery served as Savannah’s cemetery for more than a century and contains over nine thousand graves. Established in 1750, by 1789 it had been expanded three times to reach its current size. Colonial Park Cemetery is approximately 6 acres in size and is located in the heart of Savannah’s Historic District.

Every haunted city needs at least one good haunted cemetery, and Savannah is no different. Located at Abercorn and Oglethorpe, Colonial Park Cemetery is considered one of the most haunted locations in all of Savannah. Some of the local paranormal enthusiasts even go as far as calling Colonial Park Cemetery ‘Paranormal Central.’

Within the 6 acres of ground which make up Colonial Park Cemetery, there are over 10,000 people buried; however, there are not even 1,000 grave markers. Many people were buried in mass graves. Others had their grave marker knocked over or destroyed. Many people believe this willful desecration of burial grounds helps to fuel the haunted activity which is attributed to Colonial Park Cemetery.

Can you find what is wrong with this headstone?

…the occupying Union soldiers are reputed to have left their mark in Savannah in a unique and unusual way — by subtly altering the gravestones in the Colonial cemetery. Along the east wall of the cemetery lie dozens of gravestones which, according to local legend, the soldiers dug up and displaced. They changed the dates of many on the headstones with their bayonets;

Cheesman Park in Denver, CO

FunDay_Ghosts_101522_9

Cheesman Park is located in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Denver, Colorado.  The park is home to the Cheesman Pavilion, which makes the park stand out even more and a place where visitors can sit down and relax. But when night falls, the park becomes a whole different animal. In fact, it is considered to be one of the most haunted places in the entire city.

The land was originally a burial ground known as the Prospect Hill Cemetery.  The land was used as a cemetery up until some point in the early 20th century. While plans were underway to repurpose the land as a park, government officials gave loved ones of the deceased a 90 day period to exhume and re-bury the bodies before construction began. However, few bodies were removed since they had no money to do so and therefore left the bodies underground.  More than 5,000 bodies were left behind by the time construction of the park began.

Since it was built on an old burial ground, it’s no surprise that Cheesman Park of all places is haunted. The leftover remains may have been to create a hotbed of paranormal activity like any other.  A lot of people have heard phantom noises of wailing or screaming at night and have often seen sights of shadowy figures moving about.
