A Leisurely Stroll Through The Cemetery (Part 2)

Happy FunDay!

Ghostly Encounters

My two most favorite cemeteries must be in my favorite city in the country, New Orleans.

FunDay_Ghosts_102122_1

New Orleans is the most haunted city in the United States. This city is a place where the dead refuse to rest, in fact, there is no solid ground to hold them.

Take a cemetery tour or spend a night in a ghostly hotel. New Orleans features witches and warlocks, vampires and ghosts of every description. New Orleans welcomes everyone: the living, the dead and those souls in between.

A couple of blocks from where we stay in the Garden District is Lafayette Cemetery #1. Come take a tour with me.

A non-denominational, non-segregated cemetery, and the oldest of the seven municipal, city-operated cemeteries in New Orleans, Lafayette #1 was named for the City of Lafayette and established in 1833.  Following its annexation by New Orleans in 1852, the city of Lafayette in Jefferson Parish no longer exists and is simply known today as the Garden District.

The formal, four quadrant grounds of Lafayette #1 take up an entire city block and house around 1,100 family tombs and more than 7,000 people.  Within decades of its opening (thanks to the likes of yellow fever), this beautiful Southern Gothic cemetery was filled to capacity with coping tombs, internment chambers, mausoleums, crypts, and society tombs.

I just love all the architecture of the mausoleums; there are so many designs and building materials.

Every one of these tributes to the dead are unique and beautiful.

And the amazing thing to me, is that they are still in use today.

Strange sounds run the gamut in the permanently haunted grounds as walking tour visitors have been known to hear sobbing within close earshot. Tears in such a place are to be expected, but not when nobody else is standing around you at all! EVPs (electronic voice phenomena) have been captured in all areas of the cemetery grounds to include the words: “hospital”, “fever”, and “help me”.

Although I have not seen nor heard anything from this cemetery, it is still one of my favorite places to visit when I am in the Crescent City.

On a very sad note, when I was researching for this post, I found out that Lafayette Cemetery #1 is closed and has been for the last two years.  With no expected date to re-open.

City Hall acknowledged that a number of necessary tasks remain on the to-do list prior to reopening, including trimming street trees and replacing walkways with permeable paving.

But the most important item on the list hints at why the cemetery may have been closed in the first place: “Developing a plan for security personnel.”

That may allude to the fact that tomb owners, some Garden District residents and licensed tour guides have voiced concern about the “carnival atmosphere” that prevailed in the 1400 block of Washington Avenue prior to the cemetery’s closure.

It is so sad that people cannot behave themselves and be respectful in public settings.  I sure hope the city arrives to a conclusion on this issue soon and these offenders can grow up and restrain themselves from being irresponsible.  It is upsetting that a few bad apples can ruin things for the rest of us who want to enjoy the best NOLA has to offer.

Tomorrow, I will take you on a tour of the best cemetery I have been to in New Orleans, right outside of the French Quarter, St. Louis Cemetery #1.

This weekend will be wrapping up the rest of the cemetery.  Today we will be working on some of the smaller items on the right-hand side; like the branch and gate and wrapping up today’s coloring with the grass on the hill.  Tomorrow will be the lampposts and the brick pillar to the gate.

Since this a large and detailed picture, it will take us longer than the two weeks I had previously done with our first two color-along pages.  I am guessing it will take between three and four weeks to complete.  So, check back here to get the details on that weekend’s coloring and updated color chart.

To get started on this coloring page; head on over to DavidsonColoringArt on Etsy to purchase your downloadable coloring page for only $2.75.  They also have a lot of extraordinary and beautiful artwork that deal with Fantasy and Steampunk Fine Art Coloring for Adults.  There are faeries, mermaids, pirates, vintage steampunk and of course, ghostly drawings.  There are so many stunning pictures I would love to color, so you might want to look around their store for something that may interest you too.

There will be two options to print; I will be using the larger version.
